The identy relationship between the self and the other in the novel “To Remain” by Khawla Hamdi.

Abstract

The researcher of the novel "To Remain" by "Khawla Hamdi" finds it embodying the issues of the contemporary Arab novel, especially those related to identity, otherness, and the issue of the relationship with the other, and preoccupied with the questions of the present in raising controversial concepts such as: religious identity, ethnic identity, and cultural identity and their differences between the characters of the novel, which resulted in clash at times and understanding at other times. From here came the study built on a central problem: How did this novel represent the relationship between the self and the other? Is the identity connection an element of growth and construction for societies or an element of destruction and obstruction of social mobility?

It will seek to answer these questions by revealing the elements that make up identity and thus be able to highlight the role of novelistic writings in addressing the identity problem that rages in the depths of societies and stirs their folds, arriving at results, the most important of which is that the problem does not lie on identity and its multiplicity and diversity, but rather lies on the level that governs the minds of individuals and controls the course of their lives.
