Abstract

This research examines the evolving relationship between academic specialization and innovation within an increasingly interdisciplinary context. It aims to measure the extent to which deep specialization can transform from a foundation for knowledge construction into an obstacle to innovation when isolated. To achieve this objective, the study adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology with critical and prospective dimensions to review literature on multidisciplinary and integrated knowledge. The findings indicate that the relationship between specialization and innovation is non-linear ; while specialization remains the source of expertise, the primary issue lies in cognitive isolation. Furthermore, the results confirm that knowledge integration enhances innovation when scientific differences are effectively managed and transformed into productive, innovative combinations. They also demonstrate the efficacy of an explanatory framework linking depth of specialization with cognitive openness, cross-disciplinary relational discovery, and the formulation of novel solutions. The study concludes that the future of innovation does not require eliminating specializations, but rather building connected specializations capable of crossing knowledge boundaries.
