Abstract

Abstract: This research examines the image of Imam Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) as portrayed in early narrations, whether those attributed to his grandfather, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), or those recorded by historians and hadith scholars in the early centuries of Islam. This research seeks to trace the various portrayals of Imam al-Hasan (peace be upon him) presented in these narratives, beginning with his position with his grandfather, the Prophet, through his role in major events such as the Pledge of Allegiance in Kufa and his peace treaty with Mu'awiya, culminating in his martyrdom.

The research employs a critical analytical methodology that compares early Sunni and Shi'a narratives, revealing the different layers that have accumulated around the Imam's character over time. It also sheds light on how early sources dealt with sensitive issues such as his abdication of the caliphate, his relationship with Mu'awiya, and the reasons for his martyrdom. The research concludes that these early narratives, despite their diverse sources, form a comprehensive picture of Imam al-Hasan as a symbol of forbearance and peace in the face of violence and strife, while acknowledging significant differences between the Sunni and Shi'a schools in interpreting the motivations behind his actions and his spiritual standing.
