Postgraduate Students' Trends Towards Choosing Research Titles and Labor Market Requirements

Abstract

The research identifies the obstacles graduate students encounter when selecting research titles, such as being directed toward topics that do not align with their interests or capabilities, which negatively impacts their professional success and motivation. This study advocates for granting students the autonomy to choose research topics that match their inclinations while considering the priority areas proposed by the Ministry of Planning to meet the Iraqi labor market's needs. Consequently, the role of faculty members in seminars should shift from imposition to guidance and support. To explore this, the researcher developed a 52-item scale using a descriptive-analytical approach on a purposive sample of graduate students at the research stage across several universities (Baghdad, Al-Iraqia, Diyala, and Anbar). The findings revealed that seven items fell below the average percentile weight, particularly those related to the language of study, financial costs, and the economic feasibility of the research title. Accordingly, a set of recommendations was proposed.
