The Complementary Relationship Between the Historian and the Archivist in the Production of Historical Knowledge

Abstract

This article examines the complementary relationship between historians and archivists in producing historical knowledge, viewing it as a strategic intellectual partnership that goes beyond the traditional roles of each professional. The main issue addressed is the extent to which this collaboration ensures the creation of accurate and reliable historical knowledge, not limited to documenting events, but reconstructing the past analytically and methodically while considering the impact of archivists’ professional decisions on research materials.

   The study aims to explore the archivist’s role in organizing and evaluating records, and the historian’s role in interpreting them within their historical and social contexts. It also highlights the importance of collaboration, particularly in the context of digital transformations that have created new challenges for record preservation, accessibility, and authenticity.

Findings indicate that archivists do more than preserve and arrange documents; they shape possible historical narratives through appraisal, selection, and description, directly affecting the sources available to historians. Historians, in turn, rely on critical and analytical methods to transform records into coherent historical knowledge, emphasizing the social and historical context of production.

   The study emphasizes that collaboration contributes to developing precise archival description tools and improving effective access to digital records while maintaining authenticity and reliability.

   In conclusion, integrating perspectives between historians and archivists strengthens the quality of historical knowledge and ensures accurate interpretations. Joint training programs and clear institutional policies are essential to support this collaboration. Finally, the study recommends comparative research on archival practices across countries to identify best practices worldwide, thereby improving historical knowledge production and supporting scholarly research.
