Abstract

This study aims to examine the experience of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, with particular attention to its targeting of the poor and its approach to overcoming the strict collateral requirements that characterize conventional banking. Traditional banks typically extend credit only against collateral (usually the borrower’s property), which effectively restricts access to banking services to wealthier groups and excludes the poor. A second objective of the study is to assess the relevance and applicability of the Grameen Bank model to Egypt’s poverty context, and to explore how the Nasser Social Bank—whose mandate is to serve low-income and poor households—could benefit from lessons learned.

The research employs a case-study methodology to analyze the Grameen Bank’s strategies for reaching impoverished clients in Bangladesh. In addition, an analytical approach is used to identify aspects of the Grameen experience that could be adapted to the Egyptian context, with a specific focus on Nasser Social Bank.

The study finds that there is potential for developing a more inclusive financing strategy that prioritizes lending to the poor over reliance on collateral—an approach which, in practice, is affordable only to property owners and relatively higher-income borrowers. The study recommends adapting elements of the Grameen Bank model for implementation at Nasser Social Bank under specified conditions.
