Sustainable Development and Its Role in Strengthening the Tourism and Economic Sectors in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (A Case Study of Duhok Governorate)

Abstract

This study explores tourism facilities in Duhok Governorate within a developmental framework that highlights the current services and prospects for improvement. The findings reveal that tourism in Duhok is still limited compared to neighboring countries; however, its geographical position and diverse natural and cultural resources offer significant opportunities for growth. The research shows that summer, cultural, and historical tourism form the core of the sector, while winter tourism provides a promising avenue to extend and diversify the tourist season. The paper concludes that investing in infrastructure, improving service quality, and applying sustainability principles are essential steps toward increasing Duhok’s appeal and strengthening its economic role.
