Abstract

Psychological counselling is considered one of the disciplines that has important applications, for it has clear impact on humans’ life styles and how they can utilise the capabilities granted to them by God.

Scholars worked diligently, based on several theories, to provide this assistance, and their views toward the client and his/her ability to self-help differ.  There are client-centred theories, as well as solution-centred theories.  However, there are other theories that focus on what all theories have neglected, which is Carl Rogers’s Self Theory.  Carl Rogers, unlike all proponents of counselling theories, believed in the client’s awareness of his/her own good and his/her ability to foresee the problem and solve it.  Carl Rogers also posited that a counselor’s job does not transcend that of a guide.

The client, according to this theory, possesses enough awareness to help himself/herself and to move forward in his/her life to achieve his/her better, resilient, and productive self that can withstand different counselling challenges.

Therefore, this article attempts to understand the Self Theory, its principles and foundations, its idiosyncrasies, and its limitations.
