Abstract

Abstract:

This study explores the ecological significance of the Fragrant Juniper Forest ("Twalet" in Amazigh) in Lahwant, Central High Atlas. The forest plays a key role in soil protection, climate regulation, and biodiversity. Field data reveal severe degradation due to illegal logging, overgrazing, agricultural expansion, poor law enforcement, and climate change effects like drought and heat. The extinction of the local bird "Azuri," once crucial for juniper seed dispersal, has worsened natural regeneration. The study calls for legal reform, native-species reforestation, environmental education, and scientific research to preserve this vital ecosystem.
