Abstract

This scientific article addresses the significance of media literacy in the era of rapid information and communication advancements, highlighting the challenges individuals face when dealing with the influx of information from various media sources. The article begins by referencing the information revolution and its substantial impact on individuals' lives, as they are exposed daily to a vast amount of information, news, and advertisements. It emphasizes that these media are not always benign; rather, they carry messages that can negatively influence individuals' behaviors, particularly among children.

The article discusses the concept of "media literacy" as an educational tool aimed at empowering individuals to understand and analyze media messages. Media literacy is defined as an educational process that involves recognizing media content sources and their objectives, thereby assisting individuals in making informed decisions regarding the information they receive.

Furthermore, the article characterizes new media as a collection of practices arising from digital platforms that facilitate greater interaction among users. It notes that these platforms have contributed to the "democratization" of information production, allowing individuals to actively participate in content creation. The impact of imagery in new media is also addressed, with digital images becoming a primary means of communication. The article highlights how the quality and rapid dissemination of images have transformed news consumption and information processing. Additionally, it points out the challenges posed by new media, such as privacy violations and intellectual property infringements. The importance of media literacy in confronting these challenges is discussed, particularly in enhancing individuals' critical awareness.

The article concludes by stressing the necessity of reconsidering how media literacy can be integrated into educational curricula to counteract the effects of new media and mitigate its negative aspects, thereby contributing to building a society capable of effectively managing available information.
